올해 7월 9일부터 7월 11일까지 튀르키예에서는 'Kurban Bayram'(희생제)으로 지킵니다. 이것은 구약성경 창세기에 나오는 이야기와 관련한 종교젹 관습입니다.
창세기 22장에는 하나님이 아브라함의 믿음을 시험하기 위해 그의 아들 이삭을 번제로 바치라고 명령합니다.
이에 아브라함은 아들 이삭을 희생제물로 바치려고 모리아 산으로 데리고 갔고, 거기 있던 제단에서 이삭을 희생제물로 바치려고 칼을 빼들었다. 그런데 아브라함의 믿음을 확인한 하나님은 아브라함과 이삭을 위하여 다른 희생양을 예비하셨고, 이에 아브라함은 아들 이삭 대신 그 양을 희생제물로 바쳤다는 내용이다.
이슬람교의 경전인 꾸란에도 이와 비슷한 이야기가 등장합니다. 이슬람교에서는 아브라함이 번제로 드리려 했던 사람이 이삭이 아니라, 배다른 형제인 하갈의 아들 이스마엘이라고 주장하고 있습니다. 그래서 쿠르반 바이람은 이스마엘의 희생을 기념하는 이슬람교의 종교적 의식에서 비롯되었습니다.
이브라힘(아브라함의 이슬람식 표현)과 이스마일(이스마엘의 이슬람식 표현)이 알라에게 보였던 신앙을 기념하기 위해, 알라가 예비한 양을 제물로 드려 경의를 표했던 사건을 되새기며 축제로 고양시킨 것입니다.
이 기간 동안 무슬림들은 이브라힘이 알라에게 보였던 신앙을 본받아, 쿠르반 바이람을 통해 알라에게 절대 복종의 신앙심을 고취시키고 있습니다.
튀르키예에서는 초콜릿이나 사탕 같은 단것들을 서로 나누면서 '희생제 기간'을 보낸다. 튀르키예 외에도 대부분의 이슬람 국가들은 같은 시기에 같은 방식으로 '희생제 기간'을 보낸다.
그래서 우리도 '쿠르반 바이람'을 맞이하여 시리아 난민들을 위하여 선물들을 준비하고 나눠 주었습니다.
From July 9th to July 11th this year, it is observed as 'Kurban Bayramı'(Festival of Sacrifice) in Turkiye. This is a religious practice related to the story of the Old Testament book of Genesis.
In Genesis 22, God commands Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac as a burnt offering to test his faith.
So Abraham took his son Isaac to Mount Moriah to offer him a sacrifice, and he drew his sword to sacrifice Isaac from the altar there. However, God confirmed Abraham's faith and prepared another sacrifice for Abraham and Isaac, and Abraham offered the lamb as a sacrifice instead of his son Isaac.
A similar story appears in the Quran, the holy book of Islam. Islam asserts that it was Ishmael, the son of Hagar, his half-brother, and not Isaac, whom Abraham intended to offer as a burnt offering. So Kurban Bayram originated from a religious ceremony in Islam to commemorate the sacrifice of Ishmael.
It is a celebration of the events in which Ibrahim (Islamic expression of Abraham) and Ismail (Islamic expression of Ishmael) paid their respects by sacrificing a sheep prepared by Allah to commemorate the faith shown to Allah.
During this period, Muslims imitate Ibrahim's belief in Allah, and through Kurban Bairam, inspire faith in absolute obedience to Allah.
In Turkiye, they spend a 'sacrificial period' by sharing sweets such as chocolate and candies. In addition to Turkiye, most Islamic countries celebrate a 'sacrificial period' at the same time and in the same way.
So, we also prepared and distributed gifts for Syrian refugees on the occasion of 'Kurban Bayram'.
